First

Memories and wondering about something before can be painful.

In this case, I wrote about those moments when we’re with someone new, and they’re thinking of or talking about a past relationship.

We all wonder at some point what we could or should have done in that situation.

As the person watching all this, we have the challenge of figuring out what to do or say.

This is one of my attempts at filling that space of what we could say.

Verse 1:

Hearing you talk about him,
it doesn’t bother me, at least not like you might think it would.
It’s that faraway look you get,
wondering what you may have done different back then.
Its knowing he didn’t love you like he should’ve,
didn’t give you those things I know you deserve.
Maybe he said the words, can’t say I really know,
but even if he did I know he didn’t show ‘em when he should’ve
and right now sitting next to you…

Chorus:

I wish I would have known you then,
could’ve stopped by that place where we would’ve met.
I’d have stepped up first, kept your eyes on me
and away from him to save you from that hurt.

I can't turn back time, even if I wish I could
but I can show you what love should look like,
take away those places where you hurt,
fill them with something new.
And remind you that in all we have
You'll always be first.

Verse 2:

Even though I know that part of your life is over
and I don’t think you’re looking back trying to hold on to what could’ve been,
I know the doubt something like that causes
and the confusion that comes with it when you’re stepping into something new.
So look back anytime you need,
just do it knowing I’m here.
Where I’ll be that rock when you need it
or the wall to hit when you don’t know what else to do
and I’ll do it with open arms cause I know when I hold you…

Verse 3:

And while we’re on the subject,
there are a few things I need to say.
Everything back then might’ve helped get you where you are,
but when it comes to you there isn’t anything I would change.
Nobody in this world is perfect,
but I’ll be damned if you aren’t one of the closet things to it I’ve ever seen.
Your smallest desire, to your wildest dream,
they’re all things I want to help you reach.
Your passion, fire, belief, drive, faith along with everything in between,
they’re all things I’d be happy to fight or die for to make sure you keep.
Everything about you are dreams come to life I never thought I’d see,
so if I ever make you doubt anything between us
or maybe its just been another bad day, I hope you remember…

Bridge:

Now I may not know everything but there is something I do,
it could be today, tomorrow or when we’re old and gray,
I’ll still be here loving you,
holding you close whenever you’re near
so you’ll always remember…
