You Say

You Say is a song that I was sad I ever had the need to write.

It came to me one night after, first, spending time with some of the homeless kids I work with, and then after talking to the children of a friend of mine after we all had dinner.

While I tried, the lyrics still don't do justice to the pain these kids feel from the cruelty they face at times by what others say and do.

However, I do hope that it shows the love that God has for them.

Verse 1:

I think I may be broken
they said everything I do is wrong
should’ve taken that razor to my wrists
and save them from the pain of seeing me again.

I believe I may be nothing
they said I’m unwelcome, just wasting room in their world.
I should find a road to get lost on
so they wouldn’t have to deal with me anymore.

Chorus:

But You, You say I’m everything
worthy of love and dreams and so much more.
You said that You would hold me
high above the hate and pain that fills my world.

All I can do is thank You
because no matter what I do
I’ll never be worthy of the love You give
and you whisper gently, hold tight child
I’ll love you forevermore

Verse 2:

I believed I must be ugly
that nobody could want me for their own
changed my clothes, my hair
then asked why, nobody ever cared.

They told me I was stupid
too slow to get what they were going to do
told me I wasn’t trying
then wondering why I went home crying.

Chorus:

But You, You say I’m beautiful
one of the most beautiful things You ever made.
You said You had plans for me
gifts for the world that only I could bring.

All I can do is thank You
because no matter what I do
I’ll never be worthy of the love You give
and you whisper gently, hold tight child
I’ll love you forevermore.

Bridge:

They say I’m nothing
You show me that they’re wrong.
They tell me to give up
You hold me so I’m strong.

Chorus:

But You, You say I’m beautiful
one of the most beautiful things You ever made.
You said You had plans for me
gifts for the world that only I could bring.

You say I’m everything
worthy of love and dreams and so much more.
You said that You would hold me
high above the hate and pain that fills my world.

All I can do is thank You
because no matter what I do
I’ll never be worthy of the love You give
and you whisper gently, hold tight child
I’ll love you forevermore.
