Should've Loved You Like That

You'd probably think this was written because of a relationship I messed up, but it wasn't. It came after spending a day hiking and thinking about differences in how people once were and how we are today.

Verse 1:

Been reading stories
about the old times.
Things like Tristan and Isolde
back when words weren’t just lines
but truths you had to hold.

When you said I love you
it was forever
a prayer you held fast
like the good Lord above
you never turned your back
you never let it pass.

Chorus:

Now even though you left me
and said it was you that couldn’t last,
I can’t help but wonder what would have happened
If I’d have loved you like that

With passion and forgiveness,
trust and faith in you and me.
Compassion and understanding
not just letting you close that door.
Yeah, I should’ve loved you like that.

Verse 2:

Went to have a few drinks last night
saw some friends we used to share.
Said you moved out west a few years ago
and were doing pretty damn good out there.

A house on the beach in Cali
with your husband, daughter and son,
told them you finally found people who wouldn’t judge you,
they just loved you for who you were.

Chorus:

Now even though you left me
and said it was you that couldn’t last,
I can’t help but wonder what would have happened
If I’d have loved you like that

With passion and forgiveness,
trust and faith in you and me.
Compassion and understanding
not just letting you close that door.
Yeah, I should’ve loved you like that.

Bridge:

I know I could take the easy way out
let you take all the blame
but looking back at it now
it’s way to easy to see
it wasn’t you, it was me.

Chorus:

Now even though you left me
and said it was you that couldn’t last,
I can’t help but wonder what would have happened
If I’d have loved you like that

With passion and forgiveness,
trust and faith in you and me.
Compassion and understanding
not just letting you close that door.
Yeah, I should’ve loved you like that.
